Frequently Asked Questions

Are your products certified organic?

The greatest care goes into sourcing the ingredients for our products. Whenever possible, we purchase our base ingredients from local organic suppliers. However at Red Wolf Apothecary we deeply value working with and supporting local and indigenous wildharvesting. For example, many of our herbal ingredients are grown here in Corvallis, on our property, free of any pesticides or chemical treatments. In many cases, while these ingredients are free of any pesticides or other chemicals, we cannot certify them as organic.

Do you use preservatives?

Red Wolf Apothecary does not use artificial preservatives of stabilizers of any kind. Instead, we rely on the knowledge our ancestors have passed down: using beeswax and various essential oils to stabilize and prolong the shelf life of our products. Stored in a dark, cool location, most of our products remain effective for several years.

My balm or salve has become gritty or has white discoloration, is it still safe to use?

Since we do not use chemical emulsifying agents, it is not uncommon for our oil based products to seperate in what are referred to as "fat blooms”. This is entirely normal and is not harmful. Simple warm the container until the salve or balm is fully liquid. At this point you will see the blooms melt away as they reintegrate with the beeswax.

This is one of the reasons that all of our salves and balms are sold in metal or glass containers. Our customers often warm their containers on their stove top using the lowest setting (remember to never leave products unattended over a heat source).

Are your products FDA approved?

For many reasons which we will add in an upcoming page, we did not seek FDA approval for our products.
